FREELANCING 101

“The course takes you from the beginning of wanting to start your own business. It covers all the admin stuff I would never have thought about/bothered with. I realize why it is so important.

Now I also have almost everything ready if I go on my own. The exercise content made me think and forced me to set up some of the necessary systems I would need to go on my own. It also inspired me to start writing.

Tiffany Markman, the facilitator, was super-helpful with everything. Her feedback was informative and helpful. I could see she went to a lot of trouble to read everything and comment on it.”
- Jana Engelbrecht, correspondence student

WEB COPYWRITING

“I think I have learnt so much from this. The one thing is that less is definitely more, and people who visit a website prefer crisp, to-the-point copy. I think [this course] has also taught me about different tones for different websites, and also that so many websites talk about themselves and what they can offer, but they don’t really talk about the reader. I have learnt that a website should entice a reader to take the next step, not just read and move on. Thanks Tiffany.”
- Leigh Penzhorn, correspondence student

INTRO TO EDITING

“I found the introductory course to be rewarding as I could go through the module at my own pace, developing what I had learnt before continuing on to the next sections. It offered a brief overview of the main aspects of proof-reading and editing, which has benefited me in my work as a freelance proof-reader and copy editor.

It has enhanced my knowledge of the English language and helped develop knowledge about all aspects of grammar as well as the writing and editing process. The course allowed me to gradually build up my skills and technique through each component of the module, from the basics of grammar to the editorial process.

The exercises, which were challenging at times, were helpful in consolidating what I learnt through each section, and the feedback on these exercises was helpful and concise. This allowed me to acquire invaluable techniques when approaching any manuscript and going about copy editing any text.

The introductory course cleared up a lot of uncertainties that I had regarding spelling and punctuation conventions. I understand that grammar – tense, punctuation and parts of speech – not only affects the legibility and coherence of a text, but it also influences the way in which a piece of text is interpreted.

I consider each manuscript that I proofread or edit more critically and I scrutinise every comma, colon, or exclamation mark with the self-assurance of having acquired extensive knowledge on their usage through the course.

Understanding how a text achieves the appropriate interpretation allows me to edit effectively; I am able to produce work that is grammatically correct, clear, coherent, and to standard as I approach every piece of writing with added confidence. Should I still have uncertainties, there is a comprehensive module that I can refer back to in any instance of doubt.

The skills and knowledge that I have gained through this course will continue to benefit me in the proofreading, writing, and copy editing that I do. I certainly look forward to following the Advanced Copy Editing course in the future.”

ADVANCED EDITING

“I am blown away. To begin with, I love the simple way in which you approach writing. Like you say, ‘If you want to write, try English’. One of the best lessons is to use the newspaper style of writing because I used to start with the ‘scenery’ before I got to the gist of the matter. The advice on the use of bullet points, numbering and how long sentences should be is also very useful.

I enjoyed the exercises! They looked easy until I started, and then they highlighted the common mistakes I make – sometimes I read something without checking it properly and end up making careless mistakes. Now I am more aware of what I am writing and reading. I had read all of your articles on BizCommunity, so I already had a great deal of respect for you and you did not disappoint. Thank you; you were great. I hope to join you again next year for another course.”
- Cynthia Mabela, correspondence student

ADVANCED EDITING

“I enjoyed the progression from one section to the other all the way through – very natural and easy to follow without making one feel as if there were hidden agendas or attempts at catching one unawares. A real learning curve and test of abilities. Feedback of completed exercises was positive and useful as well as encouraging… I will gladly recommend you to anyone who wants assistance in the field. The good news is that I have just accepted an offer as copywriter for a website…”

ADVANCED EDITING

The course content was comprehensive, providing a basis for anyone who is in need of polishing up their own work, as well as the work of others. I personally know that I’ll now be able to produce high quality work I am confident about and can be proud of! I thought this would be an “easy on-line” course; one I would breeze through to get a quick certificate. I was wrong! It was challenging, and taught me to think carefully about the way I write – in correct and proper English. Couldn’t be happier! Whenever I had a query, it was responded to promptly, and often with extra information to help any problem areas I had…

Although the entire course was extremely beneficial, there are three learning outcomes that…have greatly improved my own written work, as well as when I edit the work of others (a task I undertake on a daily basis…) They are:

1. Redundancy:
I have found that, even in past reports, I used phrases that were redundant. This made my work “wordy” and often tedious to read. Now that I am able to notice this, I am able to write concise yet informative reports that go straight to the point, and are more enjoyable to the reader. This has been evident in the improved feedback I have received from clients.

2. Passive and Active Voice:
This is one section I struggled with in the course. Even though I think I need to work on it to perfect it, my work has improved and I find that I am writing less in the passive voice. My writing has become direct and less muddled.

3. Numbering:
Numbering within the text has always been an area that resulted in confusion for me and my colleagues. Everyone had his/her own way of numbering, which resulted in a lack of standardisation within our reports. Now that we are incorporating the correct way of numbering into our reports, I am more confident that we provide clients with a professional and publishable report.

Over and above these learning outcomes, I have a renewed enthusiasm for copy-editing and proof-reading. I find that it’s an area I would like to continue in, and I would like to expand my expertise and get more practice in this field…

INTRO TO EDITING

The material was very user-friendly and easy to refer back to. I definitely learned more than expected. The exercises were not too easy, at least giving a challenge. The learning material did not spoonfeed, so by completing the exercises you gained a little bit more knowledge. Tiffany always gave positive feedback. She gave me enough information so that I understood the reason/s for re-submitting exercises and was able to complete the work. Thanks, Tiffany, for being so patient with me.

INTRO TO EDITING

The exercises are ‘nicely challenging’ in that you think you know something till you interrogate it deeply and realise you have some learning to do – they are good for me and the venture I am to undertake. I am giving them my best. I found I read the module and then tackle one exercise, then I have to re-read that part of the module relevant to the exercise again, and so on. It’s an exciting venture for me… Thanks.
